Ministry of Forestry of Indonesia carried out bamboo resources assessment in 2005. The data consist of bamboo on forest land and bamboo on other land. Based on the National Forest Inventory data based the estimated area of bamboo resources in each province in 1990 is presented in Table 1 of the attachment.

The data of bamboo resources on forest land in 2000 was calculated by assuming that deforestation rate is 2 %. Therefore the estimated area of bamboo resources on forest land in 2000 was 611,520 ha. The data of bamboo resources in Indonesia resulted from agriculture census in 2003 which carried out by Central Board of Statistics was used as the data of 2000. The estimated area of bamboo resources grow on other land in each province is presented in Table 2 of the attachment.

Regional office of forest Inventory and Mapping also conducted bamboo inventory between 1999-2000 and the data was used as the area of bamboo on forest land since the surveys were only carried out on forest land. The bamboo inventory was conducted in North Sumatra, West Sumatra and East Nusa Tenggara with total surveyed area of 78,600 ha. Therefore the estimated area of bamboo resources on forest land in the year 2000 was 690,000 ha (611,520 ha + 78,600 ha). Based on that information the total bamboo resources area in Indonesia is about 2,104,000 ha which consist of 690,000 ha bamboo on forest land and 1,414,00 ha bamboo on other land.

Mayana and Subagyo (2004) stated that the development of bamboo plantations are implemented by self-reliance planting of the communities, community-based and large-scle platations carried out by the private enterprises with credit assistance of low interest to inter alia CV. Bambu Kitri (1.900 ha by involving 2,219 households) at Tasikmalaya district, CV. Benua Prakasa (3,400 ha by involving 3,487 household) at Sukabumi district, PT. Humas Jaya Great Giant Pineapple (1, 500 ha), and PT. Bambu Mas (2,000 ha), both at Central Lampung district, as well by the establishments of demonstration models.

Dominant bamboo species which have been developed are bamboo duri (Bambusa blumeana),  bamboo loleba (B. altra),  bamboo ampel (B. vulgaris ), bamboo betung (Dendrocalamus asper), bamboo tali  (Gigantochloa apus), bamboo hitam (G. atroviolacea), bamboo atter (G. atter), bamboo abe (G. balui), bamboo gombong (G. pseudoarundinacea), bamboo buluh kapal (G. scortechinii), bamboo lampar (Schizotachyum zolengin) and bamboo sembilang (D. giganteus) (Triyono, 2003; Vantomme et al, 2002) in Mayana and Subagyo, 2004).

Three genera of bamboo are selected to be developed, viz. Bambusa, Dendrocalamus and Gigantochloa, since the genera have specific suitability to the products produced as illustrated in Table 3 of the attachment.
